Macon, Ga. – Forward Javier Carillo and goalkeeper Anders Granstad helped FAU sweep the Atlantic Sun men’s soccer weekly awards following the Owls dominating performance at the Diadora Challenge.
Florida Atlantic cruised past Xavier and Alabama A&M in consecutive shutouts to capture the title at FIU’s Diadora Challenge.
Carillo, a freshman from Boca Raton, netted five goals on his way to being named Outstanding Offensive Player at the tournament. The forward posted the team’s first hat trick of the season with his three-goal effort versus Xavier and backed that up with two more scores against regional power Alabama A&M. Despite appearing in just four matches so far this season, Carillo ranks third in the league with his five tallies. Carillo has yet to determine a major. This is the first career Offensive Player of the Week honor for Carillo.
Granstad ran his career total to 11 shutouts after back-to-back blankings of Xavier and Alabama A&M. The senior needed to make just seven stops to earn the shutout and Outstanding Defensive Player honors at the tournament. Granstad is the only player in the A-Sun with more than one shutout this season and stands fifth in goals against average at 1.66 through seven matches. The Oslo, Norway native is majoring in International Business. This is the fifth career Defensive Player of the Week acknowledgement for Granstad.
The Owls return to action on Thursday, September 22 when they travel to Orlando to face former conference rival UCF.
