Thursday, August 25, 2005 BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Elon scored four second half goals in a 4-2 comeback win over Campbell in a men’s soccer pre-season match Thursday night. Eric Sass knocked in a rebound in the 72nd minute and Anthony Catalano added a penalty in the 85th as the Phoenix erased a 1-0 halftime deficit, then broke a 2-2 deadlock. Campbell concludes its pre-season schedule on Saturday with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff in its annual Alumni match. The Fighting Camels took an early lead when Chad Aboud split the Elon back four with a pass and Alex Bruemmer’s right-footed shot beat Phoenix keeper Taylor Saxe in the 11th minute. Elon equalized in the 56th minute when Kiki Willis’ dipping, right-footed effort glanced off Camel keeper Aaron Johnson’s hands and into the net. Less than two minutes later, Brett Paschal gave the Phoenix a goal advantage when he scored from a sharp angle in the box. Campbell drew level after 69 minutes when Sonny Guadarrama dribbled into the attacking end and found his older brother, Willy, alone in the area for the equalizer. Just under two minutes later, Elon was back in front. Aaron Parker’s point-blank shot was saved by Johnson, but Sass netted the rebound for a 3-2 edge. Elon reserve keeper Kyle Boerner twice stopped Sonny Guadarrama shots on reaction saves in the latter stages before Catalano’s penalty kick provided the final margin. Campbell held a slight 16-15 edge in shots, but Elon out-shot the Camels 10-8 over the final 45 minutes. |
