Tuesday, September 20, 2005 CLEMSON, S.C. – Gampi Lapeschi scored his fifth goal of the season in the 82nd minute Tuesday night, but Gardner-Webb’s attempt at the upset was turned away by No. 17 Clemson, 2-1, despite a late charge by the surging Bulldogs. The loss is the first for GWU this season, snapping a six-game unbeaten streak – which was the best streak to start a season in school history. After Lapeschi’s tally at the 82:56 mark, Gardner-Webb (4-1-2) made another quick charge, threatening with a corner kick in the 86th minute. The Bulldogs couldn’t come up with a shot off that chance, however, and the 17th-ranked Tigers (4-1-1) held on for the victory. Clemson went on top early, getting a goal from Hector Quintanar just 13:22 into the match off an assist from Dane Richards for a 1-0 lead. The visiting Bulldogs managed just three shots in the opening 45 minutes offensively – but keeper Tyler Kettering held down the fort after the opening score, turning away the Tigers’ next two shots on goal to keep the score 1-0 heading into halftime. |
