Sunday, August 21, 2005 KENNESAW, Georgia – Senior Jenae Gzehoviak scored a pair of goals and Annie Phillips had two assists to lead Kennesaw State to a 4-1 win over West Georgia in the Owls final preseason match of the season at the KSU Soccer Complex. Gzehoviak gave the Owls (1-1-0) a 1-0 lead when she took a pass from Phillips and beat Braves goalkeeper Lauren Camp on a grounder to Camp’s right side. West Georgia was starting Camp, who had no prior experience in goal, due to injuries to their top two goalkeepers. The Braves (0-1-0) were able to tie the match at 1-1 when Sara Sohlberg scooted a shot underneath a charging Jessica Marek in the 62nd minute. Sohlberg took a pass from Brittany Carr outside the box and was able to maneuver past Marek. The match was distinctly Kennesaw State’s over the final 25 minutes as the Owls tallied three goals. The first of the three goals came on a breakaway from Siobahn Rooney in the 68th minute. Rooney was able to take advantage of Camp’s inexperience in goal and easily beat the Braves keeper. Katrina Hirsch gave the Owls an insurance goal 72nd minute on a 40-yard free kick that found its way through traffic. Phillips assisted Gzehoviak on her second goal of the match in the 79th minute to close out the scoring. “I am pleased with the result,” said Kennesaw State head coach Rob King. “We were a little heavy-legged at times but that’s to be expected since it’s the end of preseason. We’ll take a couple of days to get our legs back and we’ll be ready for the weekend.” Kennesaw State opens the season next Sunday afternoon, August 28 against the Clemson Tigers in Clemson, South Carolina. |
