JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2009) – The ETSU men’s soccer team drew a 1-1 tie against Virginia Tech Sunday night at the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

“I am extremely proud of the guys tonight,” said head coach Scott Calabrese. “They worked very hard against a determined and experienced Virginia Tech team. Teams in the ACC are always difficult to compete against because there is a very high standard in that league. This was a good test for us, and a great measuring stick. I feel like more than anything our team showed heart and the desire to go and win the game. We weren’t just satisfied to come here and play defensively.”

The Bucs (1-1-2) were out shot by the Hokies (1-2-2) 18-12 in the match as Virginia Tech had a 6-1 advantage in corners. Senior goalkeeper Scott Rosman (Kenner, La.) had a career-high seven saves for ETSU.

“Even tough we conceded a goal in the final minutes of regulation we did not give up,” Calabrese said. “In that situation most teams will fold and lose in overtime. We came out and matched them in overtime as we had many chances to win. I am really proud that we showed that we are a team that can go on the road and compete against big teams.”

In the 7th minute, freshman Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.) drew a penalty kick for the Bucs. Virginia Tech keeper Brendan Dunn made a great save on the Sean Hoek (Newburgh, Ind.) penalty kick, but the ball was knocked off of a Hokie defender into the net to give ETSU a 1-0 lead.
