Upstate Downs Clemson in Exhibition Action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – To close out the 2010 exhibition slate, USC Upstate claimed a 2-1 victory over visiting Clemson on Tuesday night at County University Soccer Stadium.

Upstate got on the board first in the 15th-minute when freshman Jan Wienholt (Bocholt, Germany/Gymnasium HS) scored on Timo Forester's (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) corner kick from the left side.

"Our team battled well tonight, but we still have to work hard each and every match," said head coach Greg Hooks.  "I emphasized to our new players that every match was going to be a battle and nothing was going to come easy.  Obviously, we have to remember that this was an exhibition and our players have to continue to give it their all."

The Spartans nearly took a 2-0 lead heading to the half when John Collins' (Cape Cod, Mass./Barnstable HS) had his shot ricochet off the top of the crossbar.
