Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Weekly Notebook: Sept. 14

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

• ETSU and FGCU both landed in the top-eight of the NSCAA South Region Coaches Poll this week. The Buccaneers held down the third spot for the second-straight week after earning a 2-0 win over then-No. 14 William & Mary on Sunday and pushed their record to 4-1, while the Eagles entered the poll at No. 8 following their 4-0 shutout of Rhode Island.

• Five A-Sun men's soccer student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally for statistical categories for games played through Sept. 11th. Stetson's Jonathan Mendoza ranks fourth for total goals (5), fifth in goals/game (1.00) and 19th for total points (10), while his teammate Gonzalo De Mujica is tied with ETSU's Aaron Schoenfeld for 15th in total assists (3). Goalkeepers Jason McCabe from USC Upstate and Lipscomb's Brent McGee rank 13th and 20th, respectively, for total saves.

• Throughout the season, the A-Sun will keep tabs on who is the conference's active career point leader. Here is how the top-eight stands through Sept. 14th:
1. Garret Pettis, Lipscomb - 55 (24G,7A)
2. Gonzalo De Mujica, Stetson - 46 (15G, 16A)
3. Will Moorad, Belmont - 43 (16G, 11A)
4. Brandon Tarr, Belmont - 42 (17G, 8A)
5. Aaron Schoenfeld, ETSU - 38 (15G, 8A)
6. Jonathan Mendoza - 36 (11G, 14A)
7. Dan Meacock, Belmont - 31 (14G, 3A)
8. Cristian Raudales, FGCU - 30 (13G, 4A)

• Through three weeks of play, the A-Sun holds a .500 or better record against seven of the 11 men's soccer conferences it has faced. The list includes the Big Ten, Pacific-12, West Coast, Atlantic 10, Missouri Valley, Big South and Atlantic Soccer.

• FGCU senior goalkeeper Adam Glick continues to move up the A-Sun career record books in two categories; total saves and shutouts. Currently, Glick ranks fourth in shutouts all-time with 17 - only one behind third place - and he recently cracked the top-20 for total saves with his career total of 229. USC Upstate's McCabe has a chance to etch his name in the record books as the senior currently has 184 total saves - only 35 away from 22nd place.

• ETSU's Ryan Coulter currently leads all A-Sun goalkeepers in three of the main categories; GAA, Save Percentage and Total Shutouts. His 0.77 GAA would rank as the fifth-best single season mark in A-Sun history, while his four shutouts puts him two away from tying for tenth-most in a season.

• This week, 17 games are slated for play - 14 of which will be played on A-Sun soil. The A-Sun will look to stack up on wins this weekend as only one match will be a true road contest (North Florida at FIU). FGCU takes on No. 5 UC Irvine on Friday in the USF Tournament for the only match against a ranked squad for an A-Sun team.
