JU, FGCU and Stetson First to Clinch

MACON, Ga. – The Jacksonville University, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Stetson University men’s soccer teams are the first three teams to clinch berths in the upcoming 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, Nov. 9-13, hosted by East Tennessee State University.

JU clinched as Midfielder Davide Faga netted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to give JU a 1-0 win over cross-town rival UNF on Saturday night at the Ashley Sports Complex. JU used a 16-6 advantage in shots taken to improve its record to 8-5-2 overall. The Dolphins remained unbeaten in conference play (5-0-1). With the win, JU remains atop the Atlantic Sun standings in sole possession of first place.

In their last game on Oct. 21, FGCU junior Andres Navas’goal in the 68th minute of the second half broke a 1-1 tie and sent the Eagles to a 2-1 Atlantic Sun victory over visiting Lipscomb at the FGCU Soccer Complex. With the win the Eagles (7-4-2, 4-1) took over sole possession of second place in the A-Sun, moving ahead of Lipscomb (4-10-2, 3-3), and increased its A-Sun home unbeaten streak to 13 games (12-0-1).

Stetson Junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza scored two goals, his team-leading eighth and ninth tallies of the season, to lead the Hatters (7-5-2, 4-1-1 Atlantic Sun) to a 3-1 win over visiting Lipscomb (4-11-2, 3-4-0 A-Sun) Sunday at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
