Lipscomb Moves on to Semifinals with 1-0 Triumph

Wednesday, November 07, 2012

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Tyler Burkhardt’s goal in the 31st minute proved to be the deciding factor, as fifth-seeded Lipscomb defeated fourth-seeded USC Upstate, 1-0, in the Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Championship first round Wednesday night.

Making its sixth straight appearance in the A-Sun Tournament, Lipscomb advances to play top-seeded and host FGCU on Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals. Over its current six-year run of making the conference postseason, Lipscomb is 4-2 in the opening round and will look to advance to its first championship game.

Burkhardt’s goal was his second game-winning goal in the last week, as he provided the golden goal in the 91st minute of overtime during a 1-0 win at Northern Kentucky last Saturday that clinched the team’s sixth straight trip to the postseason. Senior Jeremy Reid was credited with the assist on Burkhardt’s goal at the 30:20 mark.

Lipscomb’s 1-0 victory avenges its 1-0 loss to USC Upstate earlier in the year. The shutout is the fifth of the season for the Bisons, all of which have come in the 1-0 variety. Lipscomb limited the Spartans to five shots on the night while doubling that total with 10 of their own.

Friday night’s meeting with FGCU will be the first between the two teams in the postseason, while the Bisons defeated the Eagles, 3-1, in the regular season in Nashville.
