Thursday, September 05, 2013

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The ETSU men’s soccer team opened its home schedule with style on Thursday, topping Conference-USA foe Kentucky 1-0 at Summers-Taylor Stadium for a quality non-conference win and the first victory overall for the Bucs.

After playing to a 0-0 stalemate through the first 45 minutes, Thibault Civalier scored at 46:20 to give the Bucs the lead. The Bucs outshot the Wildcats 10-5 and goalkeeper Ryan Coulter recorded a pair of saves. The match was ETSU’s first home contest of the 2013 season.

The Wildcats (1-1-0) made a trip to the NCAA Tournament last season, and was expected to be one of the toughest tests of ETSU’s non-conference schedule. Following a season-opening win over Georgia State, Kentucky received votes in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 Poll.

The Buccaneers (1-1-0) opened the season Friday, Aug. 30, in Columbia, S.C. with a narrow 1-0 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The match with the Wildcats was the next of several tough non-conference tests for ETSU. The Bucs' schedule is dotted with several teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, including upcoming opponents UAB and Winthrop.
