#ASunMSoc Title Chase Tightens with Two Weeks Left

MACON, Ga. – FGCU and Northern Kentucky sit tied atop the Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season, while ETSU and Lipscomb sit in third only one point behind.

Two matches continue the action on Wednesday as the Buccaneers and Spartans tangle on ASun.TV at 7 p.m., while Northern Kentucky starts off the day at 3 p.m. at UNC Asheville in hopes of extending their five-match unbeaten streak.

A-Sun Men's Soccer Weekly Notes (#ASunMSoc):

  • Northern Kentucky and FGCU currently sit in a tie for first place in the A-Sun with 13 points. However, ETSU can move into first place on Wednesday with a win vs. USC Upstate to push the Buccaneers to 15 points.
  • The Norse are currently riding a five-match unbeaten streak as NKU hasn't lost since Oct. 6th and own a 3-0-2 record during that span. NKU faces UNC Asheville (4-11) at 3 p.m.
  • USC Upstate is 0-3-2 all-time against ETSU entering Wednesday's contest against the Bucs. However, last season the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in Spartanburg as the Spartans' Matt Flynn scored the equalized in the 83rd minute.
  • Only one point separates the top-four teams at the top of the A-Sun standings. Take a look at the remaining schedule for each team with the infographic below:


  • FGCU has a 26-3-2 record in conference play over the past four season and have outscored their A-Sun opponents, 64-19, during the span.
  • The Norse are 5-1-4 at the NKU Soccer Stadium since joining the A-Sun last season. NKU hosts Mercer in its home finale on Nov. 2nd.
  • ETSU's Ryan Coulter next shutout will place the senior goalkeeper in sole possession of the career shutout mark passing FIU's Jeff Cassar (1992-95). Coulter currently leads all active goalies for career shutouts and lowest goals against average.

  • North Florida's goalkeeper Brad Sienkiewicz earned his second A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honor following a 1-0 shutout victory at Mercer. Entering this season, UNF had won an A-Sun Weekly Honor only three times. This season, the Ospreys have claimed four league awards.
  • Five A-Sun goalies have a GAA less than 1.00 in conference play this season. FGCU's Danny George (0.48) leads the way ahead of ETSU's Ryan Coulter (0.66), Lipscomb's Micah Bledsoe (0.67), NKU's A.J. Fleak (0.79) and USC Upstate's Dani Alvarado (0.93).
  • Three players are in the career record books for games started; Mercer's Joey Heavner (76 GS; T2nd), ETSU's Blaike Woodruff (69 GS; T19th) and Itode Fubara (67 GS; T26th). Heavner's next start will tie him for first place with College of Charleston's Josh Farrar (1992-95).
  • Stetson's JJ Bostic claimed the A-Sun Player of the Week honors following his game-winning goal vs. FGCU on Saturday. Bostic's goal snapped FGCU's seven-match unbeaten streak and moved the Hatters into fifth-place in A-Sun standings.
  • Lipscomb's Omar Djabi continues to lead the league this season in goals and points, while Stetson's Raffaele Centofanti moved to the top of the chart for assists following his two-assist effort against FGCU on Saturday.
