Belmont dropped two games to close out conference play this weekend, 3-1 at Campbell, and 1-0 at home against Gardner-Webb. The team rounds out A-Sun play at 3-3-1. Jay Ayres scored his team-leading fifth goal against the Camels, while Amr Ali earned his fourth assist. The Bruins earned the fourth seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship, the school's second highest seed. The team was the third seed in 2003. This is the fourth consecutive year for the team to qualify for the post-season. Belmont is 7-8-2, and looks to get to .500 this Friday in the regular season finale against Alabama A&M. It would be the fourth time for the program to finish at or over .500 since 1991.
Following wins over Belmont and Lipscomb, the Camels improved to 8-0 at home on the year (4-0 vs. A-Sun opponents) and extended their goal differential to 21-5 against visitors to the Eakes Athletic Complex. Campbell broke an 11-day-old attendance record at the Eakes Complex on Saturday when 1857 spectators filled the 20-year-old facility for a 4-0 Homecoming/Parents’ Day win over Lipscomb. CU drew 1481 for a 1-0 win over then 3rd-ranked North Carolina on Oct. 10. CU has only trailed for a total of 18 minutes and 7 seconds in its eight home games this year. In fact, the Camels have not trailed at the Eakes Athletic Complex since the first half of the season opener – a 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington on Aug. 26.
The 2006 season has been a season of first thus far for the Bulldogs, as they continue to look to rewrite the record books. The Bulldogs have received their first ever berth in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament. On top of that, the Bulldogs earned a firstround bye, with their win over Belmont on Saturday. Gardner-Webb also picked up their first ever wins over Mercer, Jacksonville, North Florida and VMI this season, with those four wins coming over a five game period. The five conference wins this season for the ‘Dogs, is the most that they have had in one year since joining the A-Sun in 2002. Senior Tyler Kettering made history when he became the All-Time Career Saves Leader in GWU history back in September, against Liberty.
Senior forward Tommy Krizanovic came off to the bench to score the game-winning goal to help the Jacksonville University men's soccer team defeat Mercer on Friday night. The Dolphins fell in the A-Sun finale. The Dolphins fell in the A-Sun finale to Stetson, 1-0. Despite the loss, JU secured the fifth seed in the A-Sun conference tournament in DeLand, Fla. The Dolphins will play Georgia Southern in the regular season finale at the Ashley Sports Complex on Tuesday night.
The Bisons won their Atlantic Sun opener at Belmont, but did not win another conference game. They tied Mercer 2-2 After Monday's game at Furman, the Bisons will close out their schedule Sunday at home when Alabama A&M visits. The Bisons have played in six overtime games this season with a record of 3-1-2. They have equaled last year's total for overall victories with five with two more games remaining.
Mercer earned a 1-1 draw at North Florida on Sunday to capture the sixth seed in the A-Sun Tournament. Senior Omar Liendo (La Paz, Bolivia) netted his third goal of the season. Liendo also leads the Bears in shots with 43. - Junior Roberto Cronenbold (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and sophomore David Bird (Niceville, Fla.) have combined to put Mercer among the A-Sun's elite defensive teams. The Bears are second in goals allowed and goals against average. Cronenbold has started 11 matches and Bird has started six, including the last five games.
Pollard currently leads the Ospreys with four goals . . . UNF’s tie on Sunday was its first of the season, and concludes the Osprey’s conference games . . . Goalkeeper Taylor Unsinger currently has a .704 save percentage . . . Captain Mats Elmsater leads the Ospreys in games played and started with 15, while also having one goal, one assist and four shots on goal.
The Stetson men's soccer team ended their remarkable 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season with a 1-0 win over Jacksonville to give the program its first undefeated conference season. It was also Senior Day for seven players who stood in front of the home crowd for the final time before the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Hatters are the first team since 1995 to post an unbeaten A-Sun record.
