GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro scored twice in the first 13 minutes of play Tuesday night and went on to a 2-0 men’s soccer win over visiting Campbell.
Travis Young put the 22nd-ranked Spartans in front just 1:57 into the contest. Matt Lightner’s clearance fell to Young at the top of the area, and the sophomore struck a low, right-footed shot from 20 yards just inside the left post.
UNCG doubled the margin in the 13th minute on Michael FitzGerald’s third strike of the year. Jokull Elisabetarson curled a pass into the area and FitzGerald headed the ball by Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson.
Campbell, which entered the match ranked ninth in the South Region, just missed cutting the gap in half in the final 20 seconds of the opening half when Scott Phillips lofted a pass beyond the UNCG back four, but Julian Fulton’s effort sailed just high of the crossbar.
The Spartans nearly added to their lead in the 52nd minute when Johnson dove to save FitzGerald’s breakaway attempt, and Michael Richardson’s follow caromed off the crossbar.
Both teams narrowly missed in the 55th minute when Campbell All-American Willy Guadarrama’s 15-yard shot beat UNCG keeper Nate Berry, but the ball was cleared off the line by defender Matt Elliott.
