BUIES CREEK, N.C. – An own goal in the 75th minute provided the only score of the match and Campbell defeated third-ranked North Carolina 1-0 in men’s soccer action Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Playing in front of its largest home crowd (1481) in at least 17 years, Campbell ran its home record to a perfect 6-0-0 behind freshman keeper Bryce Kenny, who made nine saves in the first start of his career.
On Tuesday night, UNC matched the highest-ranked opponent to fall to the Camels since the program joined the Division I ranks in 1977. CU knocked off then third-ranked North Carolina on Sept. 7, 1988 in Buies Creek. The Camels own a 3-2-0 record against nationally-ranked teams over the last two seasons.
The victory marked Campbell’s first over an Atlantic Coast Conference member since a 6-3 win at Maryland on Oct. 13, 1993. CU was 0-20-1 vs. ACC schools in its last 21 games before Tuesday’s result and had lost four-straight to ACC opponents since a 1-1 draw with Duke on Sept. 17, 2003.
“Obviously, this is a great win for our program,” said fifth-year head coach Doug Hess, whose Camel clubs are now 1-6-1 vs. ACC schools. “Even with all the chances Carolina had, our team defended well. For Bryce as a freshman – what an introduction to the college game – he made some really big saves. Overall, tonight was a snap shot of what I want all the time, from our effort on the field, to the emotion of the crowd.”
Campbell (7-5-1) extended its win streak to three games after Jairo Zambrana’s corner kick was redirected into the Tar Heel goal by UNC midfielder Michael Callahan at 74:41.
