DELAND, Fla. – Campbell’s Willy Guadarrama helped lead the No. 3 seeded Fighting Camels to a 2-1 win over No. 6 seeded Mercer in the first match of the 2006 Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Bealls.
A pair of A-Sun All-Conference selections connected for the first goal of the game in the 29th minute. Guadarrama netted his first goal, assisted by Richard Jata.
The Camels maintained control over the first half of play, out-shooting the Bears 13-3. Six of Campbell’s shots were registered on goal.
The junior’s second goal was recorded less than two minutes into the second half, making it his third goal scored in an A-Sun Championship game. Julian Fulton and Michael Hutchison assisted on the goal.
Mercer began to battle back in the second half, controlling the majority of ball possession.. The Bears persistence paid off when Winton Wilks netted the Bears’ only goal of the match in the 76th minute, assisted by Shane Dubay.
The Bears saw an opportunity to tie the game in the 87th minute of the match when Mark McKeever found himself alone in the box with a clear shot. McKeever was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as the Bears fell to Campbell 2-1.
With the win Campbell advances to face No. 2 seeded Gardner-Webb on Friday at 4 p.m. During the regular season, the Camels played the Bulldogs to a 1-1 overtime draw.
