DELAND, Fla. – Gardner-Webb claimed the 2006 Atlantic Sun Men’s Soccer Championship sponsored by Bealls Outlet, knocking off top-seeded Stetson 2-1 in overtime and snapping the Hatters 13-game unbeaten streak versus A-Sun opponents.
Carlton Hughes blasted in the game-winner for the Bulldogs in the 97th minute, giving GWU the victory. The overtime marked the first time since 1998 that the championship game has gone into extra periods.
Tanner Wolfe notched Stetson’s goal in the 24th minute off a penalty kick.
The Bulldogs answered with a goal in the 31st minute to tie the game at one all when Jamie Miller volleyed the ball off the post and into the net.
Both teams gave strong efforts in the second half but where unable to capitalize on opportunities, sending the game into overtime.
Gardner-Webb claims the A-Sun Championship in the Bulldogs’ first championship appearance since joining the league in 2002.
The pairings for the NCAA National Championship will be announced Monday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN News.
