Bruins Sweep Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

MACON, Ga. - Belmont split its two games against schools from the Southern Conference over the weekend, but individual performances by Wesley Wray and Brent Parker allowed the Bruins to sweep the Atlantic Sun’s Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced on Monday.
Wray, a sophomore from Bowling Green, Ky., extended his scoreless streak to 290 minutes with his third shutout of the season, a 1-0 decision against Wofford at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday. The engineering physics major won his first Defensive Player of the Week award after making three saves against the Terriers. His three shutouts tie him with ETSU’s James Holt atop the A-Sun leaders and he is the only qualifying goalkeeper in the conference with a spotless goals-against average.
His teammate, Brent Parker, assisted on the winning goal in the Wofford match then scored the lone Belmont goal against Furman on Sunday to win his first Player of the Week award. His assist, his second of 2008 came in the 87th minute when his shot hit the post and Wade Wonderlin successfully converted the rebound. Against the Southern Conference’s preseason favorite, he tallied his third goal of the season by converting on a crossing pass through the penalty box from Preston Taylor. Parker shares the team lead in goals and points (eight) with Will Moorad.

A-Sun Weekly Notes
The Bisons beat Wofford 1-0 Sept. 28, the third shutout of the season…The Bisons head into their A-Sun season opener with Belmont Oct. 3 having won three of their last four games. The Bisons tied 0-0 with Belmont last year during the regular season and then beat them 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Stetson.
After 10 days off, the Mercer men's soccer team returns to the pitch as it opens conference play on Thursday against FGCU and concludes the week with a bout against Stetson on Saturday ... The Bears come into Thursday's match in search of win number one on the season, as they currently hold a 0-5-2 mark ... The seven-game winless streak to start the season is the longest for the Bears since 1980, when the team went 0-9 to start the campaign ... Goalkeeper David Bird has recorded at least four saves in the last five matches ... He is tied for the conference lead in saves (41) and saves per game (5.86) with USC Upstate's Patrick Regna.
