JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Richard Jata scored the winner in the 79th minute and Campbell ran its Atlantic Sun Conference record to a perfect 4-0 Saturday with a 2-1 victory at Jacksonville.
The pre-season A-Sun player of the year, Jata's goal was his first of the season. Campbell is 13-0-1 all-time in games when the senior from Port Richey, Fla., has scored, including last year's A-Sun tournament final.
The Fighting Camels (6-5, 4-0) rallied from a one-goal deficit to run their winning streak to four matches and take sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Stefan Runeman put the Dolphins (6-7, 3-1) in front on a ninth minute direct kick for his fourth goal of the season.
Josue Soto equalized on a 70th minute free kick that sailed over the wall and into the upper right corner of the net for his third strike of the year.
The winning goal came when sophomore forward Bryan Dornseif controlled a pass from Vince Petrasso on the right wing, dribbled to the top of the box, then slotted a pass to Jata in the box. The senior then hit a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net for his sixth game-winner in a Camel uniform.
"It was the second time in two weeks that we showed character in coming from behind, scoring two consecutive goals and winning against a very good team," said Campbell head coach Doug Hess, whose squad started its win streak Oct. 2 in a 2-1 triumph over Stetson. "It was good to see Jata and Soto score again in the same game."
Campbell nearly went in front in the first minute of the game when Jason Keever slipped the ball through to Khalil Johnson on the break, but JU keeper Joey Sanchez made a foot save on the one-on-one opportunity.
Later in the first half, Jata nearly equalized when his shot beat the keeper, but was cleared off the line by a JU defender.
Runeman nearly gave the Dolphins the advantage in the 76th minute when his shot hit the crossbar.
Camel keeper Aaron Johnson had four saves on the day, while Joey Sanchez of Jacksonville notched nine between the pipes.
Campbell held a 16-11 edge in shots, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Camels took five corner kicks to one for JU.
Campbell is unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven games against Jacksonville, the 2007 league regular season champion, including a 1-1 draw in last season’s A-Sun tournament final – which CU went on to claim in penalties (5-4). Five of those six victories were decided by single goals.
The Fighting Camels return to the Eakes Athletic Complex – where they are unbeaten in four games this year – for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off Thursday against A-Sun rival Lipscomb.
