Johnson blocks for Camels, Pettis scores for Bisons

MACON, Ga. - Lipscomb's Garret Pettis speared the offense with three goals to win his first Player of the Week award. On the defensive side, Aaron Johnson allowed only one goal to lead the Camels to a 4-0 mark in conference play to win his second Defensive Player of the Week award, the conference office announced on Monday.

The senior goalkeeper allowed only one goal in two games as the Camels ran their win streak to four, all against conference opponents. The St. Charles, Mo., native had six saves in his third shutout of the year, a 3-0 blanking of UNF, then had four stops in Campbell’s 2-1 win over Jacksonville in a battle of league unbeatens. For the season he has started 11 games, played 1,002 minutes, has three shutouts and a 1.08 GAA.

Pettis, the freshmen forward, scored three goals this weekend as the Bisons beat ETSU 2-1 and USC Upstate 4-1. He scored two in the Upstate win. The Elizabethtown, Pa., native leads the A-Sun in goals (8) and points (17).

The Bisons and Fighting Camels will face off at Eakes Athletic Complex on Thursday. Both teams are unbeaten in A-Sun play.

Weekly Notes
Belmont: Belmont has played its first three A-Sun matches without a defeat for the first-time ever. The four goals in Belmont’s 4-0 victory over ETSU on Oct. 12 were a season-high for Belmont and the most in a game since a 4-0 win over Lipscomb on Oct. 8, 2005. The seven wins for Belmont this season matches last year's total and is only two away from tying the all-time record for victories in a contest when the Bruins went 9-7-1 in 2003. Belmont officially has seven matches left in the season not including a potential spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament in November. Sunday’s match was also senior Cyrus Eaton's 65th match of his career, which places him only one off of the Bruins' top-10. Carlos Macioch (1997-2001) and Ryan Trogien (1999-2002) each played in 70 matches in their career and share the all-time Belmont record.

Campbell: CU's current 4-game win streak is its longest since the Camels won 5 in a row from Oct. 6-22, 2005. CU was unbeaten (3-0-1) in 4-straight games during 2007, but one of those contests ended in a draw. Campbell is unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven games against Jacksonville, the 2007 league regular season champion, including a 1-1 draw in last season’s A-Sun tournament final - which CU went on to claim in penalties (5-4). Five of those six victories were decided by single goals. Pre-season A-Sun player of the year, Richard Jata scored his first goal of the season - a 79th minute game winner - Saturday at Jacksonville. Campbell is 13-0-1 all-time in games when the senior from Port Richey, Fla., has scored, including last year's A-Sun tournament final. Campbell hosts Lipscomb (Thursday) and Belmont (Saturday) this week. CU stands 4-0 at home this year with a 10-3 goal differential. CU has only trailed for 16:01 of a possible 360 minutes on its home turf this season.

Mercer: The Mercer men's soccer team lost its first two matches of the conference season last week, dropping a pair of 1-0 decisions at Jacksonville and at UNF ... With the losses, Mercer's overall record now stands at 1-7-3 and 1-2-1 in the A-Sun ... The Bears now own a road winless streak of 23 matches dating back to 2005 ... This week, the Bears look to avenge 2007 losses to current A-Sun-unbeatens Belmont and Lipscomb ... The Bruins visit Bear Field on Thursday at 7 p.m. and the Bisons close out the week's action on Saturday at 7 p.m.

USC Upstate: USC Upstate returns to action this week with its fifth straight A-Sun game Sunday night at 7:00 against East Tennessee State. The Spartans look to end its school record 11-game losing streak. After going five games (Sept. 12-Sept. 24) without scoring a goal, Upstate has scored five goals in the last five games. Starting with ETSU, the Spartans will play three home games before ending the season with three straight road games.
