Macon, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun conference office honored junior Mario Gil with
A-Sun men's tennis player of the week on Tuesday. Gil, a Santa Cruz, Bolivia native,
is majoring in economics.
Gil recorded a 3-0 record in both singles and doubles play last week. On Mar.
8, he defeated Birmingham Southern's Matt Mabry 6-2, 6-0. Gil also paired up with
Chapman Mitchell to beat BSU's Richter and Ray team in number three doubles, 9-8,
(7-4).
The following day, Gil registered another victory at number three singles, 7-5,
1-6, 6-1, over Artoym Starkov of Campbell. Gil and Mitchell also picked up their
second consecutive win in doubles, 9-7, against Campbell's Thesleff and Gorjup.
To close out the week, Gil notched his third straight singles victory, defeating
Bethune-Cookman's Jerome Ward 6-3, 6-2. Gil is 8-3 on the season in singles matches.
The Atlantic Sun Conference announces the Player of the Week every Tuesday during
the 2006 men's tennis campaign.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb,
Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
