MACON, Ga. – UNF’s Moritz Buerchner and Campbell’s Karolina Chernaya opened the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference tennis season with undefeated marks in singles play as they picked up the first A-Sun Tennis Player of the Week awards of the year, announced Wednesday by the league office.
MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Moritz Buerchner, UNF (So. – Haimhausen, Germany – Business)
• First A-Sun Player of the Week award
• Opened the season with three victories in singles play and a 2-1 doubles record
• Took down No. 44 Miami’s Waylon Chin (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) at the No. 1 Singles slot
• Continued with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Georgia State’s Gabriel Townes
• Finished off singles play with a three-set win against Florida A&M’s Takura Happy
WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Karolina Chernaya, Campbell (Fr. – Tashkent, Uzbekistan – International Business)
• First A-Sun Player of the Week award
• Scored two wins over the week playing as the No. 1 Single for the Lady Camels
• Downed Howard’s Michelle Brown (6-1, 6-1) and Georgetown’s Victoria Sekely (6-0, 6-3)
• Campbell defeated Howard, 3-2, and Georgetown, 4-1, to open the season
