MACON, Ga. – Kennesaw State’s Vera Shkundina earned her third career Atlantic Sun Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award, announced Wednesday by the league office, after winning her eighth-straight singles match, while USC Upstate’s Edgar Rodriguez led the Spartans to their first two victories of the season against Presbyterian and Anderson.
MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Edgar Rodriguez, USC Upstate (Jr. – Bogota, Columbia – Business Administration)
• Second Career A-Sun Player of the Week award
• Playing at No. 1 Singles and No. 2 Doubles went 5-0 at those spots
• Defeated South Carolina’s Ivan Machado in a come-back victory (0-6, 6-4,6-4)
• Claimed straight-set victories over Presbyterian’s Andrew Brigham and Anderson’s Stan Atema
• Led the Spartans to their first two victories of the season
OTHER NOMINEES:
• Beauregard Treyz (Fr., UNF) – Went 2-0 at No. 5 with a win over regionally ranked opponent
• Larbi Lamzouri (Sr., Campbell) – Pushed Camels to 5-1 on season with two singles victories
• Jesus Bandres (So., ETSU) – Led Bucs to 7-0 win against MTSU with two match victories
WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Vera Shkundina, Kennesaw State (Jr. – Ufa, Russia – Sports Management)
• Third Career A-Sun Player of the Week award
• Won two matches at No. 1 singles with victories against Coastal Carolina and Savannah State
• Currently riding an eight-match singles winning streak; claimed 14 of last 15 overall at No. 1
• Helped Owls to a 2-1 week and earn league-leading ninth victory
OTHER NOMINEES:
• Borislava Nikolova (Jr., Campbell) – Earned two victories at third position against Hampton and East Carolina
• Andra Voinea (Sr., ETSU) – Dropped only one game in straight sets victory against Georgia State’s Othilia Lindqvist
