MACON, Ga. – In his first Division I match, USC Upstate’s Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso rallied from a set down to defeat Davidson’s Sam Burns in the Spartans’ spring season opener. He also partnered with Leandro Osorio for a doubles victory over the Wildcats, and on Friday earned his first career Player of the Week Award the conference office announced.
The senior posted a three-set win at No. 5 singles, dropping the first set 7-5 before coming back with 6-4, 6-3 wins. He and Osorio also notched an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles. The Peru native moved into a tie for eighth in singles wins at Upstate, tying Rudy Vargas (1991-95), with 43, and now needs just one win to reach 90 combined (singles and doubles) in his career.
