DES MOINES, Iowa - Campbell's Sam Tilly finished 22nd in the long jump at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday, June 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Tilly started his competition with a leap of 7.20m in the first round. He then bettered the mark to 7.37m on his second attempt, but couldn’t top it on his third and final attempt (7.36m). Tilly jump of 7.37m/24'02.25" was good enough for him to place 10th in first flight of the preliminaries, but with the event consisting of two flights and only the top 12 advancing to tomorrow’s final it was not enough. Tilly finished 22nd overall after placing ninth in the same event as a junior.
The long jump leader heading into the finals is Florida State freshman Ngonidzashe Makusha, whose leap of 8.08m/26’06.25 is nearly five inches farther (7.97m/26'01.75) than his next closest competitor, Julian Reid (Texas A&M).
Tilly finishes his Campbell career as the school’s all-time leader in the long jump for both indoor (7.67m.25'02.00") and outdoor (7.88m/25'10.25") season. He also was a part of the school’s record breaking 4x400 team (3:25.17). Further, he was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the 2008 Atlantic Suns Indoor Championships and captured both the team's MVP Award and the school's Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award for 2008. The senior was also named the Atlantic Suns Track Athlete of The Week six times in his distinguished career.
