MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference honored Maggie Johnson of Belmont University as the Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year to highlight the league’s inaugural Academic All-Conference team.

Johnson, an exercise science major from Naperville, Ill, entered 2011 as the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year. She leads the conference this season with 530.5 points (5.15/set) and in kills with 486 (4.72/set) and is the A-Sun active career kills leader with 1,531. With 22 more kills, she will move into second place all-time for career kills in the A-Sun record books, a position currently held by former Bruin Lindsay Cleveland (1,552 kills, 2002-2005).

Johnson is also a three-time Player of the Week recipient and helped the Bruins to a share of the A-Sun regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Volleyball Championship. She also earned a share of the 2011 A-Sun Player of the Year honor, announced on Tuesday.

The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams this fall to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s matches.
