Kennesaw State, UNF Granted Active D-I Membership Status

INDIANAPOLIS - Division I has granted active membership status to Kennesaw State, New Jersey Institute of Technology, North Florida and Utah Valley, effective this fall. The Division I Leadership Council approved the actions based on recommendations from the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet.

Each year of the four-year reclassification Kennesaw State and UNF were required to do the following and have them approved by the NCAA: Send five institutional/athletic representatives to the NCAA Convention, send the same five representatives to a NCAA Compliance Seminar, submit an annual report and submit an updated strategic plan

In addition, the following was also required the final three years: Year Two (2006-07 academic year): Have a full NCAA Compliance Review conducted by an outside agency; Year Three (2007-08 academic year): Conduct and submit a complete NCAA Division I Self Study involving broad-based participation by the Institution and community; Year Four (2008-09 academic year): Complete NCAA Athletic Certification including the Peer Review Team Visitation last October.

The Council also approved FGCU to become active Division I multi-divisional members in women's volleyball and baseball and USC Upstate in softball, and men’s soccer.

All of the schools were in the reclassification or provisional membership process before the Division I Board of Directors’ August 2007 decision to place a moratorium on new Division I members. That moratorium lasts through August 2011 but does not affect the progress of schools that had begun the process before August 2007.

The Division I Leadership Council is reviewing membership standards and is expected to develop additional criteria over the next year.
