JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In his three years as the director of athletics at Jacksonville University, Alan Verlander has transformed the athletic department into a consistent that is winning conference titles, competing in NCAA Tournaments and graduating student-athletes on an annual basis.
With that success in mind, Verlander has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the athletic department through 2013.
"What Alan has done in leading our athletic department is remarkable and we are more than happy to give him a long-term contract extension," said JU president Dr. Kerry Romesburg. "Alan has a great vision for building a foundation for the long-term success of our athletic department. The next phase of our athletic progress will be improving our facilities and I believe Alan has the direction and passion to carry through our plans."
Since taking the reins of the program in 2005, JU has won at least four conference championships each season. This athletic year, the Dolphins won four conference championships, captured the state championship in rowing and received the Sherman Day Trophy by winning the Atlantic Sun Conference women's all-sports race for the first time in school history.
"I am very appreciative to Dr. Romesburg and our Board of Trustees for the confidence they have placed in me," Verlander said. "Three years ago I wanted to build our department into a shining light for our university and I believe that is now happening. While this extension is great for me and my family, it is really signifies the great work our student-athletes, coaches and staff put in everyday to make JU a wonderful place. I would put our coaching staff and athletic staff up against anyone and as the AD, it is a great time to be a Dolphin."
