Macon, Ga. -- Stetson makes a clean sweep of the Atlantic Sun Softball Pitcher
& Player of the Week honors the conference office announced today.
Sophomore Melissa Wiggins (Temple Terrace, Fla./Sport Managment) was named Player
of the Week and rookie Erica Demers (Miami, Fla./Undecided) claimed Pitcher of
the Week.
Melissa Wiggins guided Stetson to a perfect 4-0 mark last weekend in the third
Stetson Softball Tournament of the season at the Stetson Softball Field. The senior
hit .571 as she went 8-for-14 with six RBIs and three runs. She also recorded
two doubles, two walks and a home run. Wiggins extended her current hitting streak
to seven games as she hit successfully in all four games, including three multiple
hit games. She also had the eventual game-winning RBI in two of the Hatters' four
games.
The third baseman hit .500 on the first day of the tournament, going 1-for-2 with
two walks, one run and one RBI against Marist, then 2-for-2 with two runs, one
RBI and a home run vs. Winthrop.
On Saturday, Wiggins went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles against former
A-Sun foe Samford. She was also 2-for-4 with an RBI against Western Michigan.
Wiggins leads the team and is listed among league leaders in batting (.500), slugging
percentage (.833), hits (18), total bases (30), RBIs (14) and doubles (5).
Demers went 2-0 in the circle with a perfect 0.00 ERA. The freshman tossed two
shutouts in two complete games, allowing just five single base hits and no walks
in 14.0 innings of work while striking out 12 batters.
She struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in a complete game in Stetson's
7-0 victory against Winthrop on Friday. She then recorded six strikeouts in a
two-hitter against Samford on Saturday.
The freshman has now allowed just four earned runs, one walk, and one extra-base
hit in her first 39.0 innings in the circle. She leads the team and is listed
among conference leaders in win-loss record (5-0), ERA (0.72), and opposing batting
average (.171).
The Hatters will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 28 as they take on Western Michigan
in a double header.
The Atlantic Sun Conference announces the Player of the Week every Monday during
the 2006 softball campaign.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell,
ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb,
Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.

Lauren Caviness, CAM (So. - P - Fuquay-Varina, N.C. - Pre-Pharmacy)
--Caviness continues to be dominant for the Camels allowing just one earned
run spanning 19 innings and three starts last week for Campbell. Caviness allowed
just six hits and five walks, while striking out 18 batters. She finished the
week with a staggering 0.37 ERA and opponents hit just .097 off the southpaw.
Caitlin Miller, UNF (So. - RF - Yulee, Fla. - Sports Leadership) -- Miller
finished the week with a .500 batting average for the Lady Ospreys going 7-for-14
at the plate with four RBIs and a .643 slugging percentage.
