DeLand, Fla. – Stetson softball downed Jacksonville 3-0 and 7-1 Saturday evening at the Stetson Softball Field to secure the 2006 Altantic Sun Conference regular season title.

With the sweep, the Hatters also claim the no. 1 seed in the 2006 A-Sun Championship. The sweep marks the seventh out of 10 league doubleheaders for Stetson this season. The Hatters improved to 41-13 overall and 16-4 in conference games.

The 16 regular season A-Sun wins set a new school record. In game one, senior Melissa Wiggins put Stetson on the board with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored senior Shawna Wiggs from third. The Hatters added two runs in the fifth inning for the 3-0 lead when Wiggs and junior Sherrel Fountain scored on a throwing error. Wiggs had reached on a walk and Fountain reached on a bunt single.

The win also helped set the seedings for the 2006 Atlantic Sun Tournament, held May 11-13 at the FAU Softball Complex in Boca Raton, Fla.

ETSU clinched the fifth spot Friday after a two-game sweep of Lipscomb. With Jacksonville falling to 6-14, the Dolphins left the door wide open for Gardner-Webb (7-13) to take the sixth spot in the double-elimination tournament.
