ETSU Outlasts Campbell In Semifinals

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- East Tennessee State scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to counter Campbell’s tying run in the top of the inning as the Buccaneers recorded a 5-3 win over the Camels at the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championship on Friday.

Mary Catherine Vercoe (10-13) went the distance for ETSU, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out three. Kelly Weaver (14-10) took the loss in relief, giving up the decisive runs in 3 2/3 innings and striking out four.

East Tennessee connected on 10 hits total in the game, getting five hits and three runs off of Campbell starter Lauren Caviness. Stephanie Gaynord and Amanda Haverman had two hits each. Gaynord, along with Janine Sprague, also had an RBI and a run – both doing so on solo home runs in the first three innings.

Jessica Lonsinger drove in two runs for ETSU. Jessica Huffman had a two-run home run in the first for Campbell, which fell behind after single tallies in each of the first three innings for the Bucs. Hally Harris scored two runs for Campbell, including the tying run in the sixth.

The win moved ETSU (22-35) to the losers’ bracket final, where the Bucs will play Stetson at 7:00 p.m. Campbell ends the season at 31-28.
