MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer softball player Katie Rosentreter was named to Team Canada, as announced by Softball Canada Tuesday. The 2006 Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year will represent Canada in the Pan American Games, Canada Cup, U.S. World Cup and the World University Games.

“I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to play with Team Canada and compete against some of the best athletes in the world,” said Rosentreter. “Not too many people are given the chance to represent their country in such prestigious events and I am thrilled to be a part of this.”

Rosentreter, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, attended the Canadian National Team Selection Camp in Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 2-7, where she competed for a spot on Team Canada among the top athletes in Canada. Team Canada begins training June 17, and will compete in the Canada Cup in White Rock, British Columbia, June 30-July 8.

Following the Canada Cup, the team travels to Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in the US World Cup. Rosentreter will then travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to represent Canada in the Pan American Games July 16-30, followed by a trip to Bangkok, Thailand, for the World University Games August 8-17.

“It is a great honor any time you are selected to represent your country,” said Mercer softball head coach Tony Foti. “Katie has worked hard over the last four years and this has been a goal of hers since she got here. She deserves this and we are very proud of her.”

An Atlantic Sun Freshman team selection in 2003, Rosentreter was also named to the first-team all conference and the all-tournament team her sophomore year. During her time at Mercer, Rosentreter re-wrote the record books, currently holding career records for ERA, opponent batting average, appearances, shutouts and strikeouts.

“I had a great experience playing at Mercer,” added Rosentreter. “Mercer has provided me with so much support and I am so grateful to everyone here who has helped me chase my dreams.”
