Monday, February 19, 2007 Belmont struggled in its first outing of the season. The Bruins played in the Jacksonville State Gamecock Classic and finished the weekend with a 1-3 mark. Belmont was unsuccessful on day one, dropping contests to South Alabama, 12-0, and host-Jacksonville State, 7-4. BU came back to split its games on the second day, edging USA, 9-8, and falling to JSU, 9-1. Belmont returns to action this weekend at the Breast Cancer Strikeout Classic hosted by Middle Tennessee State. The Bruins will see action against Morehead State, Ball State, Tennessee State and host-MTSU over the three-day tournament. No team notes provided The Bulldogs went 1-3 last week, dropping a doubleheader at Charlotte before splitting their home opener against Big South memeber Liberty. After GWU lost its opener, Emily Sherrill had an outstanding game at the plate and solid pitching by Taryn Beck allowed the Bulldogs to win the game by a 9-5 score. GWU returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at noon at Georgia Tech before traveling to the UNC-Wilmington tournament this weekend. No team notes provided KSU went 3-3 last week, sweeping Army and beating Georgetown before falling to Evansville, Miami (Ohio) and Georgia Tech in the KSU Owl Classic. Freshman Malorie Weller led the Owls last week, batting .429 with three doubles and seven RBI. This week the Owls host Samford on Wednesday and the KSU classic on Friday and Saturday against Liberty and College of Charleston. Freshman third baseman Kellie Sirus had a powerful weekend with a grand slam, a three-run homer and a two-run homer in four games with Coastal Carolina and Elon. The Lady Bisons shutout Coastal Carolina 4-0 Saturday, their second shutout of the season. The Lady Bisons have opened the season 5-1 despite playing a line-up that usually includes six freshmen and one junior college transfer. Freshman right-hander Christen Campbell recorded her first collegiate shutout with the 4-0 win over Coastal Carolina. She is 3-0 on the season. The Bears grabbed their first win of the season against Army in the consolation game of the Panther Invitational, hosted by Georgia State. Mercer enters this week with a 1-5 record and will face Florida A&M Wednesday before hosting the Mercer Classic Friday-Sunday. UNF finished the week 3-2 at the College of Charleston's tournament, losing its first two games before rebounding for three-straight wins. After falling to the host Cougars and North Dakota State, UNF avenged its loss to North Dakota State and took down Manhattan and James Madison to finish third in the event. Christina Evans and Heather Hyde were both named to the all-tournament team after each collected a home run in the event. The Lady Ospreys will take on their second SEC opponent of the season this week when they head to Florida for a doubleheader on Wednesday. This weekend Stetson hosted Iowa, Marist and Howard at the first of four Stetson softball tournaments this season. Throughout three days the Hatters remained undefeated, beating all the teams. Sophomore Andrea Migliori helped lead the Hatters this weekend with two homeruns, one against Howard and the second against Iowa. In the championship game against Iowa, the Hatters fell short from the first inning when Iowa went up 2-0. The Hatters were finally able to get on the board in the third inning but would come up on the losing end 4-1. The Hatters stand at 4-1 overall this season with their next game coming up on February 21 at home in a double header against Albany starting at 4 pm. |
