The word "CLASS" is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School TM, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact in their communities. The award was originally launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving school early to pursue professional careers. Veteran sportscaster Dick Enberg conceived the award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition. Midway through the regular season the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot with voting by the media, coaches and fans. The winner will be announced in June at the NCAA Women's College World Series. Fans can follow the Atlantic Sun on Twitter and on Facebook.
