The weather was cold, but the Dolphins’ bats were not as the JU softball team slugged its way to an 11-7 victory over Virginia Tech at the JU Tournament on Saturday night.

The Dolphins (2-0), who downed Drexel earlier in the day, pounded out 13 hits on the evening, including a six hit, seven-run second inning to help pull away with the win.

Sophomore Amanda Schmidt recorded a team-best three RBI and was one of five Dolphins with two hits. Sophomore Sarah Sigrest (1-0) secured the win in the circle after allowing seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two strikeouts in seven innings.

“This was a great day,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “We showed great signs in our first games and beat two very good opponents. I am happy with the way we jumped on Virginia Tech early, but our defense hurt us a little bit. I know we can work on playing a complete game as the season progresses. Overall, I’m happy with the team’s effort and looking forward to using the momentum to finish on a high note.”

The Hokies (1-1) got three hits and an RBI from Whitney Davis, while Courtney Liddle finished with three RBI.
