Belmont wrapped up regular season play over the weekend, splitting with visiting
Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers took game one, 11-1, but the Bruins rebounded
in the nightcap behind the pitching of sophomore Sammi Parks (Riverside, Calif.)
and won 6-0. Sophomore Sarah Vaughn (Lenoir City, Tenn.) batted a blistering
.800 over the two games, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Angie Helseth (Vancouver,
Wash.) went 3-for-5 with one run and three RBI for .600. Parks tossed the entire
second game and finished with a 0.00 ERA, allowing only one hit.
Campbell
Campbell wrapped up its regular season 27-38-1 with a sweep over in-state rival
Gardner-Webb. The Camels have shutout three-consecutive Atlantic Sun opponents,
all three against the top hitting teams in the league. Freshman Brittany Stanley
improved her consecutive scoreless inning streak to 24.0 innings after holding
GWU scoreless over an 8-inning ball game.
ETSU
ETSU wrapped up regular season play Friday afternoon with a split to Mercer.
After rallying back from a three-run deficit by scoring two runs in the fifth
and one in the sixth, the Bucs dropped a nine inning heartbreaker in game one,
when Crystal Condra's two-out RBI single gave the Bears the 4-3 win. However,
ETSU's bats lit up in the nightcap, tallying seven runs in the final two innings
to capture the 8-0 victory in five innings. On Wednesday, the Bucs split with
Western Carolina as Amanda Haverman's game-winning three-run home run lifted
ETSU to victory in game one. Freshman Darci Gilbert earned her 10th win of the
season as she tossed her second complete game shutout of her career against
the Bears. Seven of the nine ETSU hitters recorded a hit in the game two win,
while senior Stephanie Gaynord and sophomore Mary Catherine Vercoe led the Bucs
with three RBI apiece. After being projected to finish sixth in the preseason
poll, the Bucs claimed the third seed in the 2007 Atlantic Sun Tournament presented
by Coca-Cola. ETSU will face fourth-seeded Lipscomb on Thursday, May 10. The
Bucs knocked the Bisons out of first place back on April 7, after outscoring
them 25-1.
Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb dropped a pair of close games at Campbell before rebounding to
earn a split with Mercer on Senior Day. After GWU fell 4-2 in the first game
and down 2-0 in the second game, the Bulldogs plated three runs in one inning
to preserve the 3-2 win. Alison Coffey tossed a complete game and the Bulldogs
clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, marking the first
time GWU has been higher than the No. 6 seed. The Bulldogs are off until the
conference tournament.
Jacksonville
After a week off from finals, the Dolphins return to the diamond for the last
time this season as they host Stetson in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader
at the JU Softball Complex on Thursday. The matc hup will also be the last home
doubleheader for seniors Valerie Alter, Katie Buell and Renee LaCroix. JU will
also look to end the season on a high note after dropping seven of the last
eight conference games.
Kennesaw State
The Owls, who clinched a share of the A-Sun regular season title with a win
over Mercer on Wednesday, ended the year over the weekend by winning the 2007
KSU Invitational with an 8-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield. The Owls also
said goodbye to six seniors this weekend; Megan Gant, Missy Hobdy, Janet Kearns,
April Keasler, Keri McKee and Jennifer Nolan. McKee homered in Sunday afternoon's
semifinal while Nolan hit a home run in the championship game and Kearns pithced
a complete-game shutout. McKee set yet another school record when she hit her
record 65th double against CSUB. The hit also tied the single-season doubles
mark of 22. McKee, who was the MVP of the tournament, is also Kennesaw State's
all-time leader in hits and runs batted in and ends her career as the second-ever
player to hit over .400 for her career. Three-time Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher
of the Week, Brittany Matthews, had another outstanding performance when she
broke her own school-record with a 16-strikeout performance against Northern
Colorado on Friday. Matthews struck out 16 of the 221 batters she faced and
took a perfect game into the seventh inning. Matthews finished the year with
246 strikeouts, the second highest total in school history. Christina Caldwell
struck out 252 batters in 1999. Matthews is also just seven strikeouts away
from the all-time record of 613 hled by Lisa Macki.
Lipscomb
Freshman pitcher Christen Campbell slammed a walk-off grand slam, the first
or her career, to win her own game 13-9 Thursday against Middle Tennessee State
University The Lady Bisons have three hitters in the top seven in the conference
in hitting: freshman Abby keese and junior Heather Collins, tied for fifth with
.369 averages) and freshman Lauren Dortwegt in sixth with a .367 average. The
Lady Bisons are back in the conference tournament for the second time in the
past three seasons.
Mercer
The Bears had a solid week, splitting in all three of their doubleheaders.
Mercer started the week with a split against league-leader Kennesaw State, falling
in the first game, 7-1, and taking the second game, 3-1. The Bears then traveled
to Johnson City and took game one against the Bucs, 4-3, to clinch their berth
to the conference tournament, but fell in the second game, 8-0. Mercer wrapped
up its conference schedule at Gardner-Webb on a high note, defeating the Bulldogs
in the first game, 4-2, and dropping a 3-2 decision in game two. Senior Kelley
Bretscher is just one start away from holding the all-time career starts record
at Mercer.
UNF
UNF did not play last week … the Lady Ospreys will return to the field on
Friday when they travel to Florida State for a doubleheader before returning
home to close out the season against A-Sun foe Stetson on Saturday … UNF lost
its only other meeting with Stetson earlier this years 2-1 … the Lady Ospreys
and Seminoles have never met … UNF can finish no lower than sixth in the conference
standings and could finish as high as fourth with a pair of wins against Stetson
… with Kara Rutenbar's solo home run against Kennesaw State in the team's last
outing, UNF now has 34 home runs this season, setting a new season high for
the Lady Ospreys.
Stetson
Stetson needs one win to capture the top seed in the A-Sun Championship for
the second straight year and seventh time overall.
