MACON, Ga. – Kennesaw State’s Brittany Matthews and Campbell’s Brittany Stanley shared Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week honors while UNF’s Gwen Williams earned A-Sun Player of the Week as announced by the league office.
Matthews had yet another great week for the Owls, as she posted a 3-1 record and a 1.88 ERA in games against No. 22 Georgia Tech, Jacksonville and UNF. The left-hander posted complete game shut-outs in the openers against the Dolphins and Ospreys, and followed with a win in relief in the finale against UNF. For the week, she recorded 23 strikeouts while opponents batted just .167 off the junior. With her three A-Sun wins, the Owls hold a two-game lead over preseason Stetson in the regular season standings. With a sweep of in-state foe Mercer on Wednesday, KSU will clinch an outright title. The Brooks, Ga., native majors in Professional Sales
Stanley posted a 0.88 ERA in appearances against North Carolina State and Lipscomb, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits in 16 innings of work. Against the Wolfpack (who swept a three-game series from No. 22 North Carolina this weekend 3-0, 5-0, 2-0), the freshman held the fourth best offensive team in the ACC to just four hits over a seven-inning complete game performance, while fanning four batters. The West Lafayette, Ind., pitched an amazing nine-inning complete game shutout against the best hitting team in the Atlantic Sun on Saturday, Lipscomb. Stanley struck out four Bisons and allowed just four hits over her nine innings in the circle. Only four Lipscomb runners reached second base in the game and none made it passed second. The key A-Sun victory pulled the Camels magic number for clinching a spot in the A-Sun Tournament down to one. She has yet to determine a major.
Williams blasted three homers in a 4-2 week for the Ospreys. She hit a pair of game-winning bombs in UNF’s sweep of A-Sun rival Mercer. To open the week, Williams went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and three runs scored in UNF’s rout of Florida A&M. For the week, the second baseman hit .444 with a 1.000 slugging percentage. The Jacksonville, Fla., native had a hit in all six games and is riding an 11-game hitting streak. The junior majors in Health Science.
