DeLAND, Fla. - Entering the seventh inning trailing 2-1, Stetson plated two runs in the inning to take a 3-2 decision and knock the top-seeded Lipscomb Lady Bisons out of the 2008 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship.
The seventh-inning fireworks started with a one-out, game-tying solo home run off the bat of Amanda Lindsey.
Then, with two outs in the inning, Amy Peters advanced into scoring position after a clean theft of second base. In the same at-bat, Amy Joyce grounded a single into center, prompting Stetson head coach Frank Griffin to send Peters home. In a close play, Peters slid under the tag of Lipscomb catcher Jennifer Allsup for the winning run.
"You can't win if you don't gamble, and that's just what we were doing," Griffin said.
Besides her heroics at the plate, Lindsey carried the Hatters with her arm as well. She picked up her 23rd win of the year, allowing five hits and striking out six in the process.
"I understand the police here are after Amanda Lindsey because she just stole that ball game from Lipscomb," Griffin said. "She put them away on the mound, only letting them score in one inning and then came up with one out in the seventh…what can I say, these kids never quit."
The top seed in the Championship did not go quietly into the night. Trailing 1-0 entering the home half of the fifth, Lipscomb scored a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. With one out, Heather Collins drove home a run with one of her two hits on the game, scoring Sara Simons from second. A sacrifice hit courtesy of Christen Campbell allowed Kellie Sirus to score the go-ahead run.
Alaina Jacobson took the loss for the Lady Bisons inside the circle. She gave up three runs, all earned, while allowing seven hits and two walks.
The defending-champion Hatters survive to play in yet another elimination game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Lipscomb bows out of the Championship, failing to earn a victory. The Lady Bisons are the first No. 1 since the induction of the current format in 1996 to fail to win a game at the Championship.
