DELAND, Fla. - Fifth-seeded Campbell scored the first six runs in Thursday's winner's bracket contest with No. 4 ETSU, and held on for a 6-3 victory at the Atlantic Sun Softball Championship. The Camels open the conference tournament with two victories for the first time since 1996.
Catcher Amanda Littlejohn opened the scoring for Campbell (39-23) in the top of the first with a one-out triple to right field that scored Courtney Quinn all the way from first base. Karlie Love added a second run in the opening frame with her two-out infield single that brought Littlejohn home.
Right fielder Robin Leathers padded the Camel lead in the fourth with her single to right field to bring home Keeli Michael from second base.
Littlejohn led off a three-run Campbell fifth inning with her 13th home run of the season over the right field fence. Michael grounded out for an RBI, and Katie Woodcock scored on a passed ball later in the frame for a 6-0 Campbell advantage.
The Lady Bucs (29-32) cut into the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on a three RBI double off the bat of Katy Jett. Campbell starter Brittany Stanley held ETSU scoreless the rest of the way however, and the Camels became the Championship’s only team to start 2-0.
Littlejohn finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, closing out just a double shy of hitting for the cycle.
Stanley improved to 23-9 on the season, as she picked up her second win of the day, striking out eight while scattering five hits over her seven innings of work. ETSU starter Marissa Hardy struck out five in four innings, but absorbed the loss and fell to 18-14.
ETSU will face Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon in an elimination game, while Campbell will await the winner of that game at 6 p.m.
