CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Down one run in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore third baseman Shayla Cullum delivered the walk-off base hit to advance Campbell, as the Camels defeated North Carolina, 7-6, in NCAA Regional action at Williams Field.
CU improves to 42-24 with the win, downing the Tar Heels for the first time since April 6, 2005. Carolina finishes its season at 50-12-1, now eliminated from the tournament.
UNC was the first to tally a score in the contest, managing to load the bases with two out in the top of the third, setting up junior leftfielder Whitney Allen. With the first pitch she saw, Allen belted a double off the wall in right-center, clearing the bases and giving UNC a 3-0 lead to start things off, followed by another run in the fourth.
The Camels finally came through in the bottom of the fifth after nearly a two and a half hour rain delay, as a pair of base hits by Amanda Miller and Keeli Michael started the rally. After a pair of Tar Heel errors, CU claimed a pair of runs on a Katie Hinton single. Sophomore catcher Amanda Littlejohn then belted a three-run homer, her 15th on the year, to give the Camels their first lead of the ballgame.
North Carolina answered in the top of the seventh, however, taking the lead on a Danielle Spaulding two-run homer to left, her 11th of the season.
The lead was short-lived for the Heels as well, thanks to a Katie Hinton double to left-center that plated freshman Chapel Hill native Lizzie Goldbach, Cullum’s single won the game for the Camels.
Sophomore Brittany Stanley (26-10) extends her already school record win total to 26, allowing six runs, three earned, while fanning five and walking three. Junior Lisa Norris (17-5) takes the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs in two innings of work, striking out three and walking one.
Campbell goes on to play Brigham Young for the rights to move on in the tournament with a 9 p.m. start at Williams Field.
