Jenks Selected as Finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, announced today the 25 finalists for the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award. Senior Cheyenne Jenks became the second Eagle (Carmen Paez, 2008) to be named a finalist for the national honor.
"We cannot be any prouder of Cheyenne for her accomplishments," said head coach Dave Deiros. "She's an integral part of our success. It’s is a great honor for us to have Cheyenne named to the short list of 'Who's Who' in college softball."
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA's Stacey Nuveman, Florida State's Jessica Van der Linden, three-time winner Texas pitcher Cat Osterman, Tennessee's Monica Abbott and Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher.
Cheyenne Jenks, the only unanimous 2008 first-team All Atlantic Sun Conference selection and the 2009 Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, has led the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles to a 37-5 overall record (7-1 in conference). She has earned Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors two times this season and has been featured on ESPN.com. Jenks currently leads the A-Sun Conference in every major offensive category including batting average (.491), slugging percentage (1.079), on-base percentage (.634), runs scored (52), hits (56), RBI’s (61), home runs (19), total bases (123) and walks (44).
