FGCU's Jenks Earns A-Sun Player of the Year

MACON, Ga. - FGCU third baseman Cheyenne Jenks led the Eagles through the year and unanimously earned the A-Sun Player of the Year award. Campbell junior Brittany Stanley and head coach Drew Peterson took home Pitcher and Coach of the Year awards, respectively. Whitney Kiihnl led the Lipscomb postseason honors, earning Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
In FGCU's second year in Division I play, Jenks hit 23 home runs to sit second in NCAA rankings while her .473 average ranks fourth. The senior also knocked in 73 runs to lead the A-Sun and tie her own A-Sun single-season record. Along with Jenks, her teammates Jessica Carter, Lauran Ziegler and Courtney Platt earned spots on the First Team. FGCU tops the NCAA rankings with a team batting average of .351.
Stanley landed on the First Team for the first time, topping A-Sun play with a 0.63 ERA. Her 10 wins in conference play set a Camel single-season record. After earning 2008 Tournament MVP, the junior stepped up to lead Campbell to its first regular season title since 1995. Coach Peterson set became Campbell's all-time wins record holder with his 246th win to pass Julie Brzezinski. He now owns 264 total wins. Taylor McGee and Christina Melton posted All-Freshmen honors, and senior Karlie Love earned a spot on the First Team.
UNF catcher Ashley Battaglia earned her second-straight First-Team selection after receiving unanimous votes to earn her spot. The senior set the UNF single-season record for doubles (25). Rookie teammate Saina Dent landed a spot on the All-Freshmen team. Sophomores Katie Kelly of Jacksonville and Mercer's Jenni Holtz landed first-time spots on the First Team. Mercer outfielder Holly Oglesbee wraps up the First Team with her second-straight all-conference honor.
Lipscomb rookies Kiihnl and Mollie Mitchell collected unanimous votes for the All-Freshman team. Fellow Lady Bisons Courtney Billington and Caroline Mason also secured spots on the team. The rookies helped lead the Lady Bisons to winning 30 or more games for the first time in their NCAA era. Kennesaw State’s April Harper and Catherine Tarvin, ETSU catcher Amy Campbell and Jacksonville pitcher Sarah Sigrest join the quartet of Bisons on the All-Freshman team.
