Camels Take Out Dolphins in Day One
|

DeLAND, Fla. - In the final game of day one of the 2009 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship presented by Holiday Inn Express at Patricia Wilson Field, the Campbell Camels eliminated the Jacksonville Dolphins, 5-1. Pitcher of the Year Brittany Stanley notched her second win of the day improving her record to 17-4 with four hits, one run and seven strikeouts.
As the lead batter in the top of the fourth inning, Robin Leathers blasted a solo home run past the right field fence. The hitting did not stop there as Katie Hinton singled through the left side and then First-Team All-Atlantic Sun selection Karlie Love slammed a double to the center field wall to send Hinton home.
All-Freshman selection Christina Melton fouled out to advance Love's pinch runner, Brittani Hubbard to third. On the next bat All-Freshmen selection Taylor McGee singled up the middle to bring in Hubbard to give the Camels a 3-0 lead. Stanley finished the inning with a ground out to second.
Jacksonville answered back with its first run of the season against Campbell. Alexis Novak singled to left field to start the bats for the Dolphins. Amanda Schmidt continued the hits with a double to right center and made it to the corner on the Campbell throw sending Novak past the plate for a 3-1 score.
In the top of the sixth, the Camels got their bats swinging again with Amanda Miller sending a double to left field. McGee reached first via a base on balls. Stanley hit a single to the pitcher, sending McGee to second, but outing Miller in the process.
The big hitter from Campbell's game against Stetson, Hilary Wheatley, doubled down the left field line to send McGee home and put Stanley's pinch runner Lizzie Goldbach on third. With ducks on the pond, Keeli Michael singled to the shortstop to send in Goldbach for a 5-1 lead.
Jacksonville would not come back and ended the game with four hits on 25 at bats. Sarah Sigrest pitched 5.2 innings with eight hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
