Lipscomb Puts Up Six to Knock Out Hatters
|

DeLAND, Fla. - Lipscomb's big bats closed out Stetson's season after winning, 6-2 in the second game of day two of the 2009 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship presented by Holiday Inn Express. Freshman of the Year Whitney Kiihnl notched another victory to move her record to 18-9.
Kiihnl tossed 142 pitches surrendering five hits, two walks and fanning 14 Hatter batters. The Lady Bisons earned six runs on seven hits.
Lipscomb jumped out to a hot start with Second-Team All-Conference selection Lauren Dortwegt's single to short stop. All-Freshman selection Courtney Billington reached first on a fielder’s choice knocking off Dortwegt at second. Billington stole second before First-Team All-Atlantic Sun junior Kellie Sirus intentionally walked. Another first-teamer, Abby Keese stepped up to knock a single to right field and advance the runners to second and third.
Christen Campbell hit a short ball to shortstop to reach first as Stetson's Chelsey Trotto made a fielding error to give Billington the chance to score. All-Freshmen selection Mollie Mitchell struck a grounder to first baseman Andrea Migliori, who hesitated on the throw home allowing Keese to make it home. Migliori then threw a bad ball to first base, sending Sirus home scoring what would be the game-winning run, putting the Lady Bisons up, 3-0.
Stetson looked to answer back as Kiihnl walked Amy Joyce and Andrea Migliori. Katie Lawerence grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Catcher Jessica Lokeinsky singled through the left side earning an RBI as Joyce passed the plate, to take the score to 3-1. The Hatters could not convert any more runners as Amanda Bailey and Leo Carreno struck out.
Lipscomb did not wait long to put more on the board as Dortwegt hit a two-out single to third base. Billington grounded to the pitcher, but a missed pick up by the pitcher kept her in the game and allowed Dortwegt to advance to second. Sirus doubled to the left side pushing Dortwegt to score. Keese walked to put three on the pond, but Lipscomb could not finish the inning as Campbell grounded out to third base, ending the inning 4-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Hatters looked to make a comeback as Amanda Bailey and Leo Carreno stepped up to the plate with singles. On a one-out appearance, Carolyn Boyd reached base with a single to short stop, loading the bases for Stetson. Second-Team All-Conference outfielder Amy Joyce singled to the right side scoring Bailey, making the score, 4-2.
The Lady Bisons did not want Stetson to close the gap, and used uneasy Hatter pitching to start the trek around the bases. Mitchell and Mason picked up walks and with only one out, Abby Wilson singled to right field to score Mitchell on a Stetson miscue. The scoring continued as Mackenzie Tucker hit a single to first base to bring in Mason. Dortwegt lined into a double play to end the inning, leaving the score, 6-2.
Stetson committed a season-high six errors. Previously, the Hats had three other games with four errors each. The first set of errors coming against Bethune-Cookman in February and then against Iowa and USC Upstate in March.
Lipscomb and Mercer face off in the elimination game at approximately 6:45p.m. The winner of that game will go on to face the No. 1 Campbell Camels.
