Friday, November 13, 2009 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A trio of seniors were recognized prior to the match for Senior Night and each one of them delivered in front of their family and friends as the JU volleyball team handled Kennesaw State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-9), Friday evening at Swisher Gym. JU (18-8, 14-5) is now one win away of securing the No. 2 seed in the A-Sun Tournament after hitting a match-high .229 while tallying a match-high 13 aces and nine blocks. The offensive output for the Dolphins snapped a season-high four match streak in which the squad hit below .200. KSU (16-11, 10-9) fell to 0-6 all time against JU after hitting a match-low .034, including an output of -.032 in the third set. “Our goal is to always improve each week and this was a big improvement over our last four matches,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “I was really happy to see our seniors continue to step up for us but this time in front of their families. Now we need to get some much needed rest and be ready for a very hot Mercer squad.” Senior libero Shelley Walroth, who finished with a match-high 21 digs in the contest, moved into eighth place all-time on the NCAA digs list with 2,399 and is 56 shy of moving into the top five. Senior outside hitter Brooke Singleton had a career night with a personal best 19 digs and seven aces while racking up eight kills. Senior middle blocker Nicki Kent added a match-high seven blocks for the fifth time this season while sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Kane added a match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks. Asjia Stokes led the Owls with nine kills while Ginny Frederick and Callie Churchwell each tallied five blocks. Sabrita Gulley led the defense with 18 digs. |
