MACON, Ga. - Each day from August 20th through the 27th, the Atlantic Sun Conference will preview the upcoming 2010 volleyball season with the A-Sun Two-A-Days, where we interview a player or coach from each of the eleven A-Sun teams. Today we talked with Megan Healey from USC Upstate and Krista Hurley of Mercer.
Tournament to Watch: Myrtle Beach Comfort Suites Invitational (Sept. 10-11) - Before the beginning of A-Sun conference play, the Spartans square off in one more non-conference tournament, where they face Coastal Carolina, the Citadel and Norfolk State. Upstate faced Citadel last season and came away with a 3-2 victory in early September.
Player to Watch: Morgan Thomas, Jr., Middle Blocker - Thomas led the team in kills as a sophomore last season with 237 and was second in blocks at 85. The Plantation, Fla. native topped the Spartans with ten 10-kill matches as well.
First Conference Game: The Spartans are at home for their first A-Sun match when Stetson comes into town on the 16th of September. Upstate swept the season series last year winning 3-0 and 3-1 against the Hatters.
Tournament to Watch: Mercer Bear Brawl (Sept. 3-4) - The Bears host Presbyterian, Citadel and Tennessee-Martin in Macon, Ga. in an early-September tournament. Last season, Mercer went 2-1 in their home tournament with the only blemish being a 3-2 loss to Furman.
Player to Watch: Aimee Frutchey, Jr., Outside Hitter - Frutchey ranked second on the team with 248 kills, while adding a team-best 384 digs. She finished the year with 11 double-double performances and notched more than 20 digs in five matches.
First Conference Game: Mercer opens the conference season on the road with a trip to the Volunteer State to face Lipscomb, the defending A-Sun Champions, on October 1st before squaring off against Belmont the following day.
