MACON, Ga. - Each day from August 20th through the 27th, the Atlantic Sun Conference will preview the upcoming 2010 volleyball season with the A-Sun Two-A-Days, where we interview a player or coach from each of the eleven A-Sun teams. Today we talked with Holly Youngquist from FGCU and Holly Munneke of Jacksonville.
Tournament to Watch: UCF Classic (Sept. 9-10) - With four tournaments on the slate for the Dolphins, the UCF Classic might bring its toughest test of the non-conference schedule. JU faces Florida Atlantic, host school UCF and Baylor, who reached the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
Player to Watch: Kathryn Kane, Jr., Outside Hitter - As a sophomore, Kane ranked third on the squad with 222 kills, 30 service aces and 218 digs. The Wheaton, Ill. native ranked third with five double-doubles on the year and racked up double-digit kills in eight matches, including seven in her final 11.
First Conference Game: FGCU and Stetson begin the 2010 A-Sun season for Jacksonville when the duo travels to the River City on October 1-2. The Dolphins swept both season series last season en route to a 15-5 conference record.
Tournament to Watch: FGCU Homewood Suites Volleyball Invitational (Aug. 27-28) - For the first time in school history, FGCU hosts a non-conference volleyball tournament in Alico Arena with UCF, Florida Atlantic, Bethune Cookman and Houston Baptist all participating in the event. The Eagles face Bethune-Cookman and UCF on the opening day and conclude action with FAU and Houston Baptist on Saturday.
Player to Watch: Jacqueline Cowden, Sr., Middle Blocker - Cowden, one of two Eagles to play in every set in 2009, led the team with a .279 hitting percentage and recorded 0.67 blocks/set, which ranked second on the team. In the A-Sun Tournament, Cowden hit .474 with 10 kills against Jacksonville in the semifinals and recorded nine kills in the championship match against Lipscomb.
First Conference Game: The Eagles are on the road to begin A-Sun play with matches at Belmont and defending champions, Lipscomb, on September 25th and 26th. FGCU swept the Bruins last season with a pair of 3-2 victories, but fell three times against the Lady Bisons, including in the A-Sun Championship match.
