A-Sun, ESPN Add 16 #ASunVB Matches to ESPN3 Schedule

Thursday, August 15, 2013

MACON, Ga. –The Atlantic Sun Conference continues to expand its digital presence in multiple sports as a total of 16 regular season volleyball matches have been added to its growing list of original content provided via its relationship with ESPN.

Beginning Sept. 6, the expanded schedule to be televised on ESPN3 includes a myriad of conference and nonconference matches. Through its relationship with the multi-screen sports network, the A-Sun continues to enhance its role as a leader in on-campus production. The A-Sun was the first to adopt the conference-wide on-campus production model, and the commitment to the initiative has resulted in a 300 percent increase in television-caliber live productions since 2011. The 16-match schedule also rivals that of any of the NCAA’s 31 Division I conferences.

“The strong and growing relationship between ESPN and the A-Sun lets us be a leader in direct delivery of campus produced digital content,” said Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “Last season we had a record number of live events televised on ESPN including growing exposure in volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. We are very proud to provide the well-deserved exposure for our talented student-athletes, their teams and the A-Sun institutions. We appreciate ESPN’s commitment to our conference-wide campus production initiative, and we look forward to launching live broadcasts this year from Kennesaw State and Florida Gulf Coast, joining Lipscomb and USC Upstate as ESPN production partners. The A-Sun remains a leader in campus production technology and we anticipate much continued success moving forward.”

Last season the A-Sun’s volleyball semi-finals and championship were available on ESPN3 live from Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena. Lipscomb became the first A-Sun member to provide original on-campus programming for the network in November of 2012, producing a total of 15 events that included volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball. Of the 16 matches this season, Lipscomb is currently confirmed to host five with two pending.

USC Upstate also produced a total of 15 events in 2012-13, beginning its on-campus production in January of 2013 with men’s and women’s basketball. The Spartans host eight matches that are confirmed for 2013, six of which are A-Sun matches that includes a Sept. 26 visit from defending A-Sun Champ East Tennessee State.

The newest member to join the video initiative, Kennesaw State, will have production capabilities by the end of September. FGCU is expected to be ready by November for the beginning of basketball season. KSU’s confirmed production schedule includes hosting A-Sun matches with Jacksonville, Stetson and Lipscomb with one other conference match pending.

“We look forward to expanding our relationship with the Atlantic Sun Conference, which recognizes the value of collaborating with a multi-screen sports network like ESPN3,” said Jason Bernstein, senior director, programming and acquisitions, ESPN. “The ability to work together to deliver exclusive collegiate live events across digital platforms to a national audience serves fans with events that might otherwise not have been shown on television.”
