Belmont Reaches Third Consecutive Championship Match
Date Posted: 11/17/2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It was a clean sweep for the host team Belmont as they
defeated No. 3 Lipscomb in straight games, 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-24), to advance
to the Championship match of the 2006 Atlantic Sun Tournament at the Curb Event
Center.
In game one, the two teams went head to head, as the Lipscomb hit . 231, and
Belmont hit .259. It was the best game of the match for the Lady Bisons, as
they ran out of steam in the final two games, hitting .023 in game two and .075
in game three.
Game two, while also hotly-contested to ten points, was more in the Bruins’
control. The Lady Bisons jumped out 1-0, which ironically turned out to be their
lone lead of the game.
Game three saw Belmont jump out to an early 9-4 lead. The defense and passing
stayed sharp, and three more thunderous kills from Mundy inched the lead out
to six, 14-8. Bruin serving – though at times too aggressive in errors – on
the whole handcuffed Lipscomb’s offense and offered many easy points.
Belmont had four players post double-digit kills. Katie Tobiaz led the way
with a match high 12 kills. First team All-Atlantic Sun Jaye Schuler and Cat
Mundy each posted 11 and A-Sun Player of the Yea Colleen Nilson had 10.
Lipscomb's Lindsey Rutherford and Alex Scruggs were limited to nine kills in
the match and Ann Mullins only posted 18 digs.
Belmont will face No. 4 seed Jacksonville tomorrow at 1 pm. Tomorrow's match
can be seen live via the Atlantic
Sun website.
