LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team was one of a record-setting 55 schools in Division I to earn the GamePlan/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2006 season, as announced by the AVCA Thursday afternoon.
The award, initiated during the 1992-1993 academic year, honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale during the school year. Each school will receive a plaque and each player a certificate commemorating the designation.
The cumulative GPA for the Bulldogs for the fall and spring semesters of the 2006-07 academic year was 3.3237.
Head coach Chris Phillips’ team was the only Atlantic Sun Conference member to receive the honor.
GWU is coming off a 14-win season in 2006. The Bulldogs, with all but one starter returning from last year’s squad, look to establish the school record for wins and make their mark during their last season of A-Sun competition.
GWU opens its season Aug. 24 against Syracuse at the Wisconsin Tournament at 5 p.m.
