MACON, Ga. – Throughout the Atlantic Sun Conference's volleyball record book, the names of Belmont's Colleen Nilson and Lipscomb's Ann Mullins appear more frequently than even the Atlantic Sun logo. Each added another record to their impressive resumes as Nilson recently became the conference’s career assist record holder and Mullins broke the career digs record on Tuesday against Nilson and Belmont.
Mullins, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., broke the A-Sun career record for digs of 1,843 established last season by Mercer's Liz Kane. Mullins started late in her pursuit of the mark. She transferred to Lipscomb after her freshman season at Tennessee. In her first two seasons with the Lady Bisons, she turned in two of the top four digs season totals. She entered the match needing only four digs to break the record.
Nilson established the assists record on October 16 against UT-Martin. After three straight seasons of at least 1300 assists, the senior from McHenry, Ill. entered the 2007 campaign less than 1000 away from April DeCoste's record. DeCoste racked up 5391 assists from 2001-04 for Georgia State. Nilson has since pushed the total up to 5543 with two regular-season games remaining and at least one Atlantic Sun Championship match remaining in her career.
In addition to the career marks, both Mullins and Nilson own the single-season record for their respective stats. Mullins recorded 689 digs in 2006 and Nilson accrued 1679 assists in 2005. They also both own the highest single-season and conference-season averages for assists and digs.
